Pigments

Pigments are molecules that absorb specific wavelengths of light and are critical to Photosynthesis. Chlorophyll a and Chlorophyll b are the primary pigments, absorbing light in the red and blue-violet regions of the spectrum. Carotenoids are accessory pigments that absorb additional wavelengths, particularly in the blue-green range, and protect against oxidative damage. The arrangement of pigments into Antenna Complexes allows plants to maximize light absorption.
